Appropriate areas in the reserve, cleared from alien invasive vegetation, are rehabilitated and re-forested with indigenous tree-species.
Farm 215 is one of the reforestation sites of the Trees for Tourism program of the South African Reforestation Trust. As from 2011 many Thousands of trees of over 30 different species have been planted out here.
This reforest site is on its way to become South Africa’s youngest indigenous forest. The benefit is already showing through an increase in birdlife and wildlife, declined erosion and increased water-retention of the streambanks.
Planting trees that will become part of forest canopies provides a multi-dynamic approach that will support not just a tree, but an entire eco-system and every facet of life within it. Ancient forest systems are preserved for future generations and the area’s carbon sink capacity will be enhanced, counteracting the effects of climate change.
The reforest site is protected. It is part of a conservation servitude area in favour of FFI – Fauna & Flora International.
