fynbos protea gallery 1
The Sugarbush family (Proteaceae) is the most famous fynbos-family and is represented with 35 different species in the fynbos reserve of farm 215. The Protea Compacta, Susannae and Obtusifolia show how species are adapted to soil-types: the first growing on acid sand, the second on neutral sand and the last on limestone. The Protea repens is a baboon favorite. They trash the nectar filled flowers of these shrubs. The Paranomus Sceptrum-Gustaviensis proves the argument that too frequent fires in fynbos can result in local species extinction. This “Sceptre” will only start flowering when it is eight years old.
